Who they are
Wide Span Homes is the kit home arm of Wide Span Sheds, a steel building company founded on the Gold Coast in 2000. The Wide Span Homes name has been held since August 2026 by a new company, Steel Kit Homes Australia Pty Ltd, while the site footer names Wide Span Sheds Pty Ltd. It supplies kits and does not build them.
What they make
Steel-framed kit homes in TrueCore steel with Colorbond roofing and fibre cement or steel wall cladding, engineered for the site. The granny flat sized range starts with The Cabin (50, 60 and 85 m²) and The Outback Oasis (50 and 60 m²), with verandahs on most designs, and runs up to four-bedroom family homes such as The Nest and The Haven. Raised floor systems on piers and cyclone-rated versions are offered.
What the price covers
Published kit prices start from $27,800 for The Cabin 50 and The Outback Oasis 50, and $32,300 for The Cabin 60, with higher prices in cyclonic regions. The kit includes the frame, roof, cladding, engineering certification and council plans. Labour, footings, fit-out, plumbing and electrical, approvals and transport are extra, so the installed cost is well above the kit price.
Installing one in Queensland
Wide Span Homes does not build or arrange approvals. In Queensland the buyer either takes out a QBCC owner builder permit or hires a licensed builder, who signs for the work. The kit is delivered from a local depot, and the buyer arranges footings, a private certifier, connections and the build.
Who it suits
Owner builders and buyers who already have a builder, and who want a low entry price and control over the finish.
Worth checking
The kit price is a small part of the finished cost, so price the build, footings, services and approvals before comparing. Check which company you contract with, since the trading name moved to a company registered in August 2026. The 20-year warranty is BlueScope's steel warranty, not a building warranty.
